Pre-Raphaelite Art Lenormand cards
The Pre-Raphaelites were a secret society of young artists, founded in London in 1848. They were opposed to the Royal Academy’s promotion of the ideal as exemplified in the work of the Renaissance master Raphael. Inspired by the theories of John Ruskin, who urged artists to ‘go to nature’, they believed in an art of serious subjects treated with maximum realism.
Pre-Raphaelite Lenormand cards are illustrated with artwork of English painter Evelyn De Morgan (1855-1919). Short wisdom sentences are written on each card.
Marie Anne Adelaide Lenormand (1772–1843) was a French necromancer, fortune-teller and cartomancer of considerable fame during the Napoleonic era. In France, Lenormand is considered as the greatest cartomancer of all time, highly influential on the wave of French cartomancy that began in the late 18th century. After Lenormand's death her name was used on several cartomancy decks. This included a deck of 36 illustrated cards historically known as the Petit Lenormand.
